Create painter robot that uses brushes, paint and canvas like a human

It is not the first time we have seen a robot painting, but what they have created in the AI Painting Project is more human than in other projects we have seen before.

The project has been carried out by members working at IBM Japan, the University of Tokyo and Yamaha Motors, it is a creative concept that gives robots the power to create art using colors, canvases and brushes.

This robot will be presented virtually at SXSW 2021 as part of the Todai to Texas exhibition (pun between today – today in English – and AI – Artificial Intelligence).

In the video that we have published on Twitter we can see how the robot’s arm holds the brush and pauses before painting, in fact it seems that it is looking for inspiration. The result is not randomly generated images, but is based on the variables programmed by artificial intelligence technology with the aim of creating art in a relaxing way.

He currently works with both acrylic paint and watercolors and also mixes color with water, so it doesn’t take much imagination to understand that in a few years they will be able to make realistic paintings without much trouble.

The complexity of the painting can be determined by giving the robot the instructions that shape the final image. For example, limiting the robot to just 30 brush strokes will create a more abstract artwork, compared to using 300 brush strokes for a more realistic-looking painting.

The team of researchers is already working to implement a visual feedback system that will allow the robot to see the painting in progress, making human intervention and co-creation possible.

The responsible professionals (eight people) work with machine learning, robotics and art, all of them in Japan.
