Facebook renews the ‘Nearby’ functionality to compete directly with Foursquare

Yet another Facebook move that shows how it wants to improve presence and use on mobile terminals before it is overtaken by others. And is that Facebook is renewing its functionality Nearby, for which, so far, it offers users of mobile applications a list of sites close to their own locations.

The new line of operation that Nearby is going to take serves to enter competition more directly with services such as Foursquare or Yelp. In this way, when the renewed functionality is already available in future updates, users will find a list of sites created in a personalized way, taking into account a series of factors such as likes and registrations made by their contacts, as well as classifications or descriptions of texts made.

The revamped functionality features a number of sub-categories, seeming to have been inspired by Foursquare’s mobile apps. We will have to start checking its operation the moment the new updates to iOS and Android arrive, see its performance and the reaction of its rivals. The same now I can take advantage of the acquisition of Gowalla.
