Facebook will shut down Lasso, betting on Reels to compete against TikTok

TikTok remains strong and unstoppable in the segment of short-lived video applications, despite the multitude of similar applications, even of Chinese origin. So much so that Facebook will finally proceed to shut down its own TikTok equivalent, Lasso, on July 10.

Expansion to some more markets and support for new languages have been of no use, which has led to Lasso not being able to count on a significant quota of users, to the point that some 80,000 active users have been recorded on Android at the time. gives at most, while the quota on iOS is so small that mobile app analytics firm App Annie didn’t get to track it.

Lasso was still an experimental application

The reason (or reasons) why Facebook failed to expand it to enough markets is still unknown, in addition to the problems the application has encountered since its launch, including the departure of Brady Voss, who led the development but left the company. days after Lasso’s release.

Still, Facebook puts Lasso in the bag of experimental applications, according to a spokesperson to the TechCrunch publication with the following statements:

We place multiple bets on our family of apps to test and learn how people want to express themselves. One of these tests was Lasso, our standalone short-form video application, which we have decided to close. We thank everyone who shared their creativity and feedback with us, which we will seek to incorporate into our other video experiences.

But Facebook Inc is not going to sit idly by, since it will bet everything on Reels, a function equivalent to TikTok integrated into Instagram, to such an extent that during the past month, they have launched their own dedicated section within the exploration tab.

As it happens, Facebook is also shutting down Hobbi, another experimental app that was released to provide a way for users to document their personal projects.
