TikTok, along with 58 more apps, are beginning to be banned in India. The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MEITY) has used Section 69 of the IT Act, as well as IT regulatory provisions of 2008 to prohibit the use of these 59 applications, having all of them in common be of chinese origin.
India to treaty reduce your dependence on Chinese tech companies in recent years, as part of that anti-everything sentiment that comes from China, where in fact this movement is, at the moment, the largest movement against Chinese technology companies made by India.
India and China have not had good relations for a long time
For the Indian government, according to its statement, these applications are engaged in activities that are detrimental to the sovereignty and integrity of India, the defense of India, state security and public order.
In addition to TikTok, there are other well-known options, such as the famous ES File Explorer file browser, the UC Browser web browser, or the WeChat messaging application, although there are also other options such as Likee and Helo, social networks similar to TikTok, and the Chinese twitter Weibo, among others.
Apple and Google have a 24-hour period to enforce the ban, according to the order issued by MEITY to these companies, although at the moment it is unknown if the prohibition only limits the installation or will also block access to the servers of these applications for those who already have them installed on their devices.
As pointed out in The Indian Express, no evidence has been presented that the applications spied on users on behalf of the Chinese government, just citizen complaints to the Computer Emergency Response Team for possible security and privacy problems.
The publication Gadgets360 adds that the companies of many of these applications had also donated money to the PM Cares fund, although at the moment the criteria chosen for the elaboration of this list are unknown.
For its part, the organization for digital freedoms Internet Freedom Foundation (EFF) considers that the order issued by the government of India under Section 69A of the TI Act is not legal, having passed the blockade through a process of notification, hearing and a reasoned order.
