We started the week with a big surprise: Nintendo and Niantic announced that they are partnering to develop new Augmented Reality games. And it doesn’t end there.
For this new augmented reality experience from the mobile phone, Pikmin is proposed as the first title of this collaboration.
New Augmented Reality game from Nintendo and Niantic
Nothing less than Nintendo and Niantic will work together in the long term to bring users new Augmented Reality games. Yes, games that will bring Nintendo characters to life with AR. And Pikmin will be the first to see the light in this new proposal, with a success already assured.
To start the partnership, Niantic and Nintendo are developing an app based on the Pikmin franchise. The app will include play activities to encourage walking and make walking more enjoyable.
So this Augmented Reality game will have one goal, beyond surprising and entertaining users, encouraging users to walk, although nothing has yet been revealed about its dynamics. A vision that was also made clear in the words of Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Pikmin:
Niantic’s AR technology has made it possible for us to experience the world as if Pikmin were secretly living around us. []Based on the theme of making walking fun, our mission is to give people a new experience that is different from traditional games. We hope that Pikmin and this app will become a partner in your life.
They have not provided any further details regarding this AR game, but they have already opened a page to register. So those who want to stay tuned for future updates on Pikmin in AR can fill out a short form at this link.
An Augmented Reality game to be available by the end of 2021, as announced in the statement.
