Owner of TikTok closes the Vigo apps and will allow its content to be migrated

Bytedance is the company that owns the ubiquitous TikTok, the video network that continues to grow like foam, but it is not the only application that it has under control, it is also responsible for many others with quite success in Asia.

Now they report that it is closing its Vigo family of applications: Vigo Video and Vigo Lite, created in 2017 so that it is possible to create videos by lip-syncing, just like TikTok. In fact, it will surely remind you of Musical.ly, a company that Bytedance bought in 2017 and used to create the resounding success of TikTok (they merged in 2018).

The company said it would shut down operations in India by October 31 and offer a transition period to allow people to export their content to TikTok. Vigo has already stopped operating in Brazil and the Middle East. Now, it is ending operations in India and other remaining markets.

Vigo had more than 120 million active users worldwide in January of this year, but according to TC it dropped to only 4 million last month, probably due to the migration of users to TikTok.

The reason is obvious: it duplicates TikTok functions, and keeping two similar apps, when one of them is so popular all over the world, does not make sense.

TikTok has more than 600 million active users worldwide and more than 200 million active users in India.

It is not the only app that closes this year. A few weeks ago I shut down TopBuzz Worldwide after it failed to get its desired traction.
