The tube comes out of the tube, from the red box that has always framed it, to offer a new logo of the most popular video portal on the Internet.
The Youtube logo has not undergone many changes in the last 12 years, which is why the evolution now announced seems to be the first step in a new phase. It removes emphasis on the word tube, which represents the tube TV, something that is only seen in museums.
Along with the logo change, the portal offers a new font, color scheme, and a few changes to the desktop and mobile look.
Bettig, a Frenchman who joined Google six years ago, has been responsible for the new logo, according to The Verge. They have highlighted the play button, a user interface element that is at the center of every video and is a brand ambassador.
The new font, logo and color will be available as of today on YouTube and in the mobile application, and will gradually be extended to the entire family of portal services.
Along with a new logo, the desktop and mobile app are being updated to match Material Design's aesthetic – fewer shadows, boxes, and forms on every page. On the google blog they comment on the changes in the mobile app:
– A cleaner design: White header to highlight content and navigation tabs at the bottom. They include new tabs, Library and Account. Always present videos: Over the next few months they are going to launch a new touch command that will allow you to jump from one video to another just by running your hand over it. Speed up and slow down playback: They will also offer this option in the mobile app. Adapted videos: The YouTube player will change its shape adapting to the video format that we want to see: vertical, square or horizontal. Browse while watching video– to view a queue of suggested videos while viewing content in full screen.
