This is the new CUPRA electric car: the Cupra el-Born

In 2019 everyone said that 2020 would be the year of electric cars, but it seems that the virus has postponed the plans. It is true that some governments are making efforts to make these the cars of the future (although there are still subsidies for the purchase of polluting cars), but there is still a long way to go to ensure that an electric car is the best solution for any situation. person.

With ranges that reach 300 km (hopefully), electric cars today have several problems that must be solved:

– The autonomy does not allow long trips, so you always have to make trips that take into account chargers on the road and service areas. – Charging times are about 2 hours in fast charging at 80%, hopefully, because there are home chargers that take more than 24 hours to do the same job. – Someone who does not have a parking lot, who parks on the street, cannot have an electric car, since the most practical solution is to have the charger inside the parking lot. – Many chargers that we find on the road are either out of service or are busy, so a journey of 1000 km has to be made in about 4 phases, with charges of more than 2 hours between one and another. – It is impossible to know what it will last a charge as it depends on road incline, headwind, air conditioning, lights, and other power-consuming items. That will also happen with gasoline or diesel cars, but since there are more fuel stations, it is not so critical (we can always walk to the nearest gas station, fill a bottle and return to the car to hold a little longer, something impossible with an electrician).

The fact is that the problems are already known, but that does not mean that we must stop innovating and presenting new proposals.

It is now at CASA SEAT where the car to be launched by CUPRA in 2021 is presented. It is el-Born, with a more sporty design than the one presented last year at the Geneva Motor Show.

With more aerodynamic elements, it has many elements in common with the Volkswagen ID.3, but in addition to certain more sporty elements, it has a Head-up Display with augmented reality, for example, making it clear that they have opted for the latest in technology.

It is built on the MEB platform, and will have a 77 kWh capacity battery, which could offer up to 500 km of WLTP autonomy (the Volkswagen ID.3 will have about 550 with the same battery). With a charger that offers the maximum possible, you can reach a range of 260 km in 30 minutes, not inconsiderable.

Although the engine power is not known, they have commented that it will be able to reach 0 to 50 km / h in 2.9 seconds.
